Some couple or more years ago, when I was still in school, an art class was going on around me. One of the boys working near me was good at art, and was working out his project on a large sheet of paper, when he accidentally knocked over the water jar, spilling its used contents of water in which he had been washing his brushes all over the paper.
The Teacher was unphased, and told him to spread the water smoothly over the paper, then leave it to dry. Later he used that blue- washed background to place the features his creative mind had dreamed up, in order to form the image he wanted. The end result I remember was good.
Life and living goes on against a backdrop. Not one of our own making, not one of which we as individuals may even be aware. God, as Creator, as the Light which shines on Everyman, is there as being in, and forming our, collective backgrounds. There may be times when He steps forward front of stage, unbidden, and there may be other times when we seek Him out. Either way, He is there.
There are people who do not grasp this fact; who live their own lives without acknowledging God, and who believe they are able to do this. In truth, they are no more able to live in this manner as they are to live without oxygen or to live outside the laws of gravity. Neither they, as individuals, nor life in general, works that way!
It is like those people who are currently going around town posting yellow stickers declaring “Not my King”. They may well think that, but just let them try to do anything that goes against the laws of King and country – the laws of this land – and see what happens to them. They will soon find themselves in the custody of the Agents of that King of whom they say “Not mine.” That is just the way things work here in the United Kingdom.
The reality of life and living is, we as people are made to work in certain and fixed ways. This is part of our DNA. Our freedom to choose and to decide for ourselves on a range of issues in all areas of life needs to be exercised within the bounds of sensibility. To go outside and beyond those bounds is risky to health and happiness, and a potential barrier to fullness of life and living.
